Hilda was born in Namibia, grew up in South Africa, spent her young adult years in New Zealand and settled on the Central Coast of NSW in 2011.

Creativity has always been an important part of her being and over the years she has found many creative outlets.  She was introduced to clay in 2018 and loves the flexibility and endless opportunities hand building offers. Her love for natural elements is reflected in the application and use of natural clay slips and oxides as well as the imprint of leaves, flowers and stones into the clay body.

Hilda’s work presents a series of sculptural human figures, each hand-built with careful attention to expression and surface. These works examine the subtleties of the human condition, capturing moments of introspection and emotional depth through clay.

Through her practice she creates a dialogue between figure and form, inviting viewers to consider the reflective qualities of ceramics—not only in surface, but in meaning and experience.

After a busy week in a full-time corporate role, she enjoys the opportunity to get lost in the making process. People, their many different expressions, quirks and moods have always been fascinating to her and seeing a personality emerge from a lump of clay is hugely gratifying. She also loves the challenge of giving each sculpture a unique and fitting name!

At the end of the day though, her hope is that her art makes people smile.
